Baby grand pianos are the smallest of the Grand piano range, and can vary in size quite considerably. The overall length of the piano is the measurement that determines whether the piano is a ‘baby grand’ or a ‘grand piano’.
The smallest baby grand that you’ll come across is 4 ft 6″ (length), although sometimes, you’ll find ultra small baby grands that can be as small as 4 ft 2″.
When comparing very small baby grands with upright pianos, the most surprising revelation is that an upright can sound better than the baby grand. This is because the string is physically longer on the upright piano than it is on the baby grand.
Let’s face it though, a baby grand can look superb in a room, and if you’re looking for a pretty piece of furniture, a baby grand will certainly fit the bill.
However, if you’re wanting the best quality sound, an upright piano may be the best route to take.
Below, I’ve detailed (not to scale) the different sizes of baby grand and grand pianos available.
